Go to Your Room

Was this anyone else's childhood?

I was the typical dweeb when I was younger. Braces, glasses (which I wouldn't wear, so I walked around rocking a sexy squint), super skinny, frizzy hair (which I didn't realize stemmed from me trying to control my curly hair which I didn't realize I had--ponytails restrict curling, doncha know). I also was (and still am) highly introverted. I was perfectly happy with books and crayons and stacks of paper. I loved filling different pencil holders with markers, colored pencils, pens with funky toppers--none to be used, you understand. They were purely decorative. And stickers!!! Why were they so fun to collect? I think I still have my albums in the attic. I would spend hours in my bedroom writing notes to my friends, drawing rainbows (I'm not much of an artist), and consuming books of the Judy Blume ilk. If Harry Potter existed then I may only have surfaced for dinner. My mother realized soon after this event that sending me to my room was not a punishment but a reward. I bet I'm not alone in that regard :)

  1. I can totally relate... I LOVED to read as a kid... still do but I have a harder time finding good material, which is why I blog-surf so much. And since all my books were in my room, getting sent there was no big deal. =) I had really curly hair as a kid too! And loved stickers... I didn't get glasses until I was 13 though, and even now prefer to go without them.

  3. Oh my gosh...I just read the post about you watching your sister, and letting her eat dirt! I laughed!!! So funny. How neat that your Mom saved those things your Grandma made for you!!

  4. In my household, I tell the kids, come out of your room - as a punishment. When I was young, punishments were usually housework which we had to do anyway. Just more. All my sisters and I share 1 tiny bedroom so going to my room and having it to myself would be a reward.

  5. My mum used to send me to my room to tidy it (i still am very very messy), she knew that within 15mins i would have found a book under the clutter and would be reading it!

  6. Yeah, it would only have been punishment here if the word 'clean' was involved ;o)
