36 Inches--What Would You Do With It?

Ahoy ahoy!! I've got an interesting bit of a question for you all, and I am insanely curious to hear the answer. Let's say that you have a yard of fabric that is absolutely perfect--it could be your dream fabric, or one that suits a friend down to her toes, or for anyone. What do you make with it? It can be one thing, many things, whatever. What do you make with that one yard of perfect-for-a-certain-person fabric? One of you lovelies asked me that question and I thought it was quite intriguing.

Since I'm sure a lot of us buy "just a yard" because we don't know what to do with it but love it, or buy "just a yard" because it's pricey or that's all that was left, your answers could give us all a spot of motivation to use some much-loved fabrics that have yet to find a stitchy purpose. I'm eagerly awaiting the comments, so type away :)

  1. Depends on the type of fabric, but I would lean toward a pillow -- it would be on display, but still be functional!

  2. I have a treasured piece of fabric from years ago, just under a yard. I have it draped over a candlestick on the desk behind my sewing table. I see it all the time I am sewing, it is a turquoise print and one day I will stumble across something to put with it.

  4. Well that is a very good question without an easy answer! I have several pieces of 'just because fabric' waiting for the right person/project combo to come along! I guess it depends on the type of fabric and the person it's being made for. My aunt-in-law goes ballroom dancing and I made her a simple bag for her dance shoes, with internal pockets for essentials like money for raffle tickets etc. I know she uses it several times a week and tells everyone it was made especially for the purpose so I guess the trick for me is to pick the person specific project that means they'll get to enjoy the fabric often :)

  5. I rarely buy less than two yards of anything. If I buy just a yard it is for clothes for my grand kids or accent fabric for bags. I have found that less than two yards really limits what I can use the just because fabric to make.

  6. I am partial to making a bag, like Bethany's One Yard Tote. Although, I will admit that I usually quilt them and add a couple of pockets to the inside. :)

  7. Weeelllll.....if it's that perfect then the first thing I'd do is keep it, untouched in my stash for 5 or 6 years. Then, one day I'll realize that I love it and really should use it. Ok, so let's say that' all happened....I'd likely make a pillowcase (so I could see it a lot) and crochet a pretty edge. :)

  8. I would only buy a yard for the opposite reason - because it was cheap. Fabric is so expensive over here that buying a yard "just because" is a real luxury. You need a copy of 1 yard Wonders...
